In the January issue of Gardens Monthly, TERRAM Ltd have a featured competition where 4 lucky winners win each win a prize package worth over £400.

Create perfect paths, driveways, borders and patios with the revolutionary landscaping system, Terram GravelSure™ and Terram GroundSure™. Made from environmentally friendly geotextile fabrics, the honeycomb-like structure will hold gravel or soil in place, even on slopes of up to 45°, providing a firm, stable surface that is resistant to movement, for many years to come.

Because GravelSure can be used on both level and sloping surfaces, it’s also ideal for reinforcing landscaped areas of your garden that are prone to erosion.

Terram GroundSure™ is one of the toughest and most durable non-woven geotextile fabrics. When it’s placed underneath GravelSure, it acts as a permeable stabilisation layer, allowing water to naturally drain away and preventing weed growth.

To create the foundations for a new path, border or driveway, simply remove any stones, weeds and roots from the area and smooth over with a rake. Cover with GroundSure, ensuring there is an overlap of approximately 50cm (20in), then spread the GravelSure on top.

Ensure all the individual cells are open and uniform in shape. Pin around the edge to retain the shape. Fill each cell to the top with either soil or aggregate gravel and then remove the fixing pins.

TERRAM CASE STUDY:

Terram GravelSure solutions – the foundations for a perfect marriage

Client: Achnagairn House / Fred Geddis Architect
Project: Achnagairn House Driveway
Product Solution: Terram GravelSure 25.15, Terram 1000™

In the spring of 2009, the owners of Achnagairn House, a stunning mansion in the Scottish Highlands, were faced with a major landscaping problem.

The 24 bedroomed listed property had been meticulously refurbished to the most luxurious of standards to provide an unrivalled setting for high-profile corporate functions and exclusive weddings. However restrictive access to the hotel meant the owners urgently needed to reinstate an old driveway, originally dating back to the 18th Century. The owners’ dilemma was that this historic drive passed through woodland which had since been placed under a tree protection order (TPO) by the Highland Council, which strictly limited the type of construction methods that could be used to get the road fit for purpose once again.

As a condition of planning permission being approved, the council ruled that all trees along the drive needed to be treated with the utmost of care. The owners’ architect, Fred Geddes, recommended a combination of Terram 25/15 GravelSure and Terram 1000™ as the perfect solution. Critically, it was also acknowledged by the Planning Department of the Highland Council and the appointed Arboriculturalist, Jacqueline Waring, as being the most eco-friendly and least disruptive method of reinstating the road.

For the owners of Achnagairn, not only was it crucial that the driveway restoration didn’t impact the surrounding trees, it was also extremely important that the drive itself blended into the natural surroundings, enhanced the already stunning landscape and contributed to a sustainable environment for the neighbouring woodland.

Construction began with the driveway area being cleared and the existing surface removed, with great care taken not to cause soil compaction around the existing tree roots. A layer of Terram 1000™, a permeable geotextile fabric, was laid over the area to prevent any of the new surface fill material from penetrating into the soil. The Terram GravelSure was then pegged out on top of the fabric, and the cells filled with a permeable aggregate. A permeable wearing course of gravel was than placed on top of the GravelSure base, resulting in an extremely hardwearing and yet natural and elegant-looking drive that truly complemented the hotel’s setting.

Terram’s GravelSure cellular confinement system has proven itself as the #1 geotextile solution for providing ground reinforcement within tree protection areas such as that surrounding Achnagairn House. Not only does it provide a stable base for traffic and an even load distribution because of its strong yet flexible cell structure, but unlike other landscaping products, the geotextile material is permeable which supports the natural circulation of air and water around the tree roots, allowing them to continue to grow and flourish.

At Achnagairn House, the uncomplicated design of Terram’s solution was successfully installed within an incredibly short timescale and proved itself to be very cost effective in comparison to traditional construction techniques. As a result, the driveway was fully restored and operational in only a few weeks, allowing visitors to once again appreciate the breathtaking, historical route to the hotel through a beautiful avenue of now carefully protected trees.

TERRAM – THE MOST TRUSTED NAME IN EARTH

Channel 4 is making a major primetime series following the design and creation of highly ambitious and beautiful new private gardens, and the inspirational people driving them, over the course of a year.

The series is a celebration of people and their passion for Nature, and a realistic portrayal of what is involved in creating truly stunning landscaped gardens. The series will set a new benchmark for this area and show people with ideas and passions and visions that go far and away beyond anything we normally associate with gardening on TV.

Each programme will follow the nitty-gritty of one large-scale project across the seasons, from autumn earthworks to spring seeding to the reveals in late summer next year. As documentary, they will follow the processes and problems through the eyes of gardeners, builders, and designers. But our central characters will be the owners, whose stories are the heart of the programmes.

From the creator of Grand Designs, this series will be fronted by Matthew Wilson, who has over 20 years experience in Garden Design, journalism, and curating RHS gardens. He is currently Associate Director of Design for the The Landscape Agency. We are looking for real projects to follow that are epic, conceived and paid for by people with design ambition, imagination and determination, who will take us on their adventures as they strive to create truly beautiful, big and outstanding garden designs.

CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEM – ADDRESSING THE ROOT OF REDROW’S ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES

Client: Redrow Homes (Southern) Ltd
Project: Farnborough Central (450+ dwellings)
Contractor: John Reilly Civil Engineering Ltd
Terram Distributor: Keyline
Product Solution: Terram Erocell 25.15, Terram 1000

Tree root protection is a task faced by many developers as they seek to provide cost-effective housing whilst preserving the surrounding environment in the face of large scale developments.

A perfect example is Redrow Home’s exciting new housing project, Farnborough Central located within 2.5km of the Thames Basin Heaths Special Protection Area (SPA), a site requiring adequate measures for an area of such significant historical interest.

Recommendations in a detailed arboricultural study of the site meant Redrow had to source an alternative, non-invasive solution to the conventional methods used in the construction of many of the site’s roads, drives, and pathways – with particular focus on the root protection of the area’s existing trees, placed under a Tree Protection Order (TPO) as part of the planning approval by Rushmore Borough Council.

Standard practice for constructing traffic-bearing surfaces involves excavating soil, allowing the installation of a sub-base that will adequately support traffic loads. Unfortunately this method of construction can badly damage trees since a by-product of the excavation is root severance.

Trees are extremely sensitive to disturbances in the soil around them reason being that, contrary to popular belief, trees do not have massive roots that go down deep into the soil but rather have lots of relatively small roots which spread out from the tree very close to the soil surface for quite large distances. About 80-90% of all tree’s roots are in the upper metre of soil and if even relatively small roots are severed, for example by digging a trench, the tree can begin to suffer symptoms of drought stress as it is no longer able to obtain all its water needs. In addition the tree may become unstable as cutting the roots is a bit like cutting the guy ropes on a tent.

It is not only root severance that may harm trees but also compaction of the soil. If the root zone of a tree is not protected during development then the soil may become compacted by vehicles repeatedly moving over the ground. The effect of compaction is to close up pores in the soil which contain air and water. The tree’s roots then begin to suffer from both a lack of oxygen and a lack of moisture, and, as the soil becomes denser, roots find it hard to penetrate the soil. All this can lead to a dieback of the root system and frequently dieback of the tree. The raising of soil levels has a similar damaging effect as it deprives roots of oxygen and creates a build up of harmful carbon dioxide around the roots.

Redrow’s answer to root protection for their Farnborough scheme came in the form of an above ground, no dig method of construction using Erocell, from Terram’s cellular system product portfolio.

Conforming recommendations within the British Standards Institution BS5837 ‘Trees in Relation to Construction’ and the Arboricultural Advisory and Information Service’s practice note APN 1 in relation to constructing driveways close to trees, the use of Terram Erocell enabled Redrow to carry out construction work within the specified root protection areas of the site – development which would not have been permitted using traditional construction techniques due to the unacceptable levels of soil disturbance and root damage caused by such methods.

Installation of the solution proved simple and highly effective. Each of the root protection areas were cleared of grass and other vegetation and then the upper layer of soil was removed by hand to limit any possible soil compaction of the remaining surface. A layer of Terram 1000, a permeable geotextile, was laid over the area to prevent any surface fill materials from penetrating the soil. The Terram Erocell was then pegged out on top of the geotextile, and the cells filled with a permeable aggregate. A permeable wearing course was than placed on top of the Erocell, separated by a second layer of Terram 1000 in areas where block paving on a bed of sharp sand was used to prevent the sand from mixing with the aggregate below.

Terram Erocell was the optimal solution for this project due to the nature of it’s strong and flexible cell structure, designed to provide even load distribution and a stable traffic base for the site with loads of up to 300kN/m2 revealing only minimal deflection (<5mm) of the surface of the filled cells. Terram Erocell is constructed from a geotextile which is permeable, allowing lateral movement of air and water.

In total, Redrow Homes deployed 1200 m2 of Terram Erocell and 2500 m2 of Terram 1000 in the designated root protection areas across the 5.16 Hectare Farnborough site.
